My PICO(T) question, search terms used, and names of the databases used for my question My PICO(T) question is: In hospitalized adults who are addicted to opioids (P), how does buprenorphine (I) compared with the administration of Beta-2 Antagonist, (C) affect the COWS assessment of the patient, (O) within the first 10 days of detox. (T) The search terms used were Opioid, Addiction, Detox, and Opioid Detoxification. The databases used for my PICO(T) question were the Library of Congress, CINHL, and PubMed. Describe the search results, original number of results, & how this changed using Boolean The search results using the Library of Congress provided zero results on my first attempt. I used the words, opioid and addiction and detox. Then I changed the search using the Boolean choices and method. I used the same key words, but after addiction I used “or” detox. This gave me 731 initial results. I continued to refine my search, adding limits, such as dates of research between 2016 – 2021. This narrowed down the material to 353 results. Using the Boolean options, I was able to cut the original results numbers in more than half. Using PubMed as my next database provided 1,748 initial results, using the words “opioid detoxification”. Minimizing the years of results between 2016-2022 produced 394 possible resources. Using CINAHL and peer reviewed articles, my second search provided 494 results. These 494 results were a much better result number from the original search using the Boolean term “or” after each term. When I used “or” the initial search was 1,016,464. Strategies to increase rigor and effectiveness of a database search using examples There are a few strategies to increase rigor and effectiveness of a database search. One example is to keep the resource list current and use resources that have been published within five years. Another example to be more effective in my search is to focus on the population of my question. My specific population for this assignment is inpatient adults who are detoxing from opioids. Knowing who your target population is helps tremendously. “Formulating clinical questions in a structured, specific way, such as in PICOT format, assists clinicians to find the right evidence to answer those questions and to decrease uncertainty.
